New MHQ Layout System

Starting today, we are updating MHQ to a new, hand-written layout system that addresses many issues we've had in the past, the most noticeable being that it now looks the same in all browsers and operating systems (so you may some some messed up pages every now and then). While that may the only immediate change, it supports a lot of of other things as well. For example, should you decide to create a skin for MHQ, while before being limited to just having custom CSS and images showing up in the same basic template, you can now create custom HTML, showing MHQ in whatever way you want, while still retaining the content of the page. If you found the need to create a webpage (say for your fan game or something) that needs to math MHQ, you can now do that by calling some predefined functions! You can ever hide the sidebar or the whole layout if you want. Also, the affiliates at the bottom are now automated, meaning we will only have to change them in one place. Although, that won't take full effect until...(to be continued)

Other M Release & Website

Nintendo of Japan announced yesterday that Metroid: Other M has been slated for a Summer 2010 release in Japan and a Winter 2010 Release in the U.S. They have also launched the official Japanese website for it at Metroid.jp, which shows japanese narration in Japanese (presumably Samus) that says, when translated, "That Dream -- it was like watching a playback of a tragedy that actually occurred." It's then followed by Samus looking out into some city (the same one seen in the trailer). It's a bit sad that we'll get it second, but at least it's not being pushed back to 2011. This also seems to stifle the rumors of a March 25, 2010 release. We'll bring you more Other M news when it becomes available.

Metroid Prime Trilogy Production Ceased

Several gaming sites, all of them attributing their source to Coffee with Games, claim that Nintendo has stopped production of Metroid Prime Trilogy. In their defense, Nintendo themselves did warn us about this when they announced the game, stating, "When first introduced, it was announced that there would be limited availability." Being only about 4 months after it's release, it would appear that Nintendo has succeeded in creating somewhat of a collector's item for Metroid fans (I sooooo lucked out that I picked up a copy by now...). They do, however, state that it should still be available via resales and the like. So, if you're wanting to get this trilogy before they're all taken, best get to the nearest game retailer ASAP.

We've also got some MHQ news to announce shortly, so be sure to stay tuned for that...

If you tried to visit MHQ in the past 12 hours or so, you may have noticed that the site was a big 404 error and that the forums were black and white. This was due to the fact that our host was having problems with failed hard drive (which MHQ happened to be on). We are extremely fortunate that they were able to resolve the issue in a timely fashion and restore just about everything that was lost. MHQ would be in pretty bad shape had they not been able to do that, so we thank them. The only thing that should be affected is our affiliate listing, which I will re-correct shortly. Thank you all for your patience.

The Nintendo Community Fangame Convention 2009 starts next week, from Monday on through Friday! If you have a fan game that you're working on, I'd highly recommend that you register a booth to show it off there. I'm in charge of the event this year, so I'm pulling for a strong show of Metroid fan games there. You can get there by clicking their affiliate link at the bottom of MHQ.

Hey all! My first update on the main page ever! A triumph, if I must say! Booyaka!

Well, I have been told that an update must have a purpose, and so I give you mine: during my kick-awesome experience at PAX 2009, I managed to record the entire Metroid Metal performance (minus a few seconds that my camera decided to not allow), and now that I've got Stemage's permission, I've hosted them on the site! The videos are best viewed when you save them to your computer by right-clicking/apple-click + 'save link as', or whatever your browser's alternative is. You can find the main set here (1.7 gigs!) and the encore here (183 MB). Needless to say, it kicked major tooshie, and you should prepare for some awesome face-melting before viewing these videos. For more on the subject, see this thread.

Rock on my brethren! Rock like the metal is your blood!

Metroid Prime Trilogy

Today marks the release of the Metroid Prime Trilogy! I will be heading to my local gamestop in a few hours to pick up my copy, as well as grab some extra goodies I got for reserving it (t-shirt and poster). When I get my hands on it I will update this post, and the Prime Trilogy subforum (located here) with pictures a-plenty, and a better over all review.

If you have the time you should definitely check out the official Metroid website, for they have had a major site update. There is a really awesome intro video with some game play footage from all three revamped titles, and deeper in the website you can find a video interview with the developers of the Prime Trilogy.

One notable thing that is stated near the end of the video: Micheal Kelbaugh, CEO of Retro Studios asks, "Will you ever see Dark Samus or Phazon again? Do you want to see Dark Samus or Phazon again?" Risa Tabata, Assistant Producer of the Prime Series says: "Its up to the fans."

What does this mean for the future of the series? We may never know. With Metroid: Other M grabbing the spot for next title to be released, it may be quite some time, if ever, that we see Retro working in the Metroid world, or Dark Samus and Phazon making a comeback. We can all only hope.

Finishing off our week, we have another great surprise.
We did have a couple more things planned, but couldn't gather the resources, so we hope to reveal those as soon as possible.
Towards the end of the year we are planning to transfer the forum to a Invision Power Board that we are hosting.
That means more control over the features, so we can improved the load times of the forum by wiping out a lot of the JavaScript that will no longer be needed. It also means more features.
We plan to integrate the forum with the website giving it more features for you.
No more advertisements ever after we get the switch.
Better skin support.
More room to expand.

Happy 5th anniversary MHQ, and may there be many more great years to come.

It's been a long time coming, and now Metroid Headquarters has finally reached it's landmark 5th anniversary! When I think back to MHQ's humble origins, I never would've thought (ever) that it would comes this far, grow this big, and bring so many people together. We stuck through to slow years of almost no new Metroid, and now we await both the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid: Other M. So Metroid is doing good, but what about MHQ? We have 618 total members in our forums now, 310 of which are active (meaning they've posted). And on the website side? We continue to work on and better existing pages as well as bring you new sections and features. Such as? You can now comment on updates, there are more downloads and screenshots for games, and and the old pitiful downloads section has been retooled into a new "Fan Art" section. And how about this new skin? It's one of my favorite yet! So, as MHQ continues to celebrate it's anniversary over the week, please join us, as more surprises will be in revealed if you do. So stick around, vote in some member polls, and help us celebrate MHQ last 5 years and hope for 5 more years to come!

And as a reminder, we have been trying to hang out in the chat room around this time.

MHQ is gearing up for it's 5th Anniversary week-long celebration. We'll have some awesome stuff to show on both the forum and the website, so be sure keep looking around MHQ for the next two weeks or so, as not all of the surprises will be revealed right away. ^_^ As like years before, we'll have an Anniversary party in the chatroom on July 15th, from 10pm-12am CST. So if you see that the countdown shows less than 2 hours, head on in there. That's about it for now (lot's of work to do...>.

Nintendo has posted the official box art for Metroid Prime Trilogy, and I must say, it looks quite astonishing. The case itself is made of metal tin, it comes with a cover, and an art booklet comes with it.

I'll have it on the game page as soon as a straight on shot is released. Stay tuned to MHQ for more on the Metroid Prime Trilogy soon.

E3 2009: Metroid: Other M Heavy on Action and Story

Not as exciting as the last interview, but this one talks more about how the groups go partnered up and are handling the game, and what they are hoping to acheive with this new game.
From the sounds of it, "The Other M" is not refering to the other metroid talked about at the end of Metroid 1.
It is being directed by Yoshio Sakamoto, who also directed the original, Super, Zero Mission, and Fusion.
MM1914 pointed this interview out to me and wanted it posted since I guess he found out while eating dinner.

This is the first second update in a single day in a while...

Thanks to DeProgrammer for tipping me off about this. 1up.com has recently conducted an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto and Yusuke Hayashi, two of the game creators for Metroid: Other M, which appears to be a final title for the game. In the interview, the game creators confirm that the new game takes place after Super Metroid and before Metroid Fusion. The gameplay will more resemble the slightly more linear style of Fusion than the deep exploration style of Super and Prime. It was also revealed that a third company is taking care of cinematic development. You can read the interview at the link posted above.

The reaction to Nintendo's latest installment of the Metroid series, Metroid: Other M has been much more diverse than I had anticipated. There are the people like me who are so excited about it they can't stop celebrating, and then there are others that are skeptical and worried about the direction they took the series. The one thing that is unanimous, though, is that everyone is glad the series is continuing. There is also a rumor floating around the internet that Nintendo has hinted at a release date in their trailer:

I'm sorry I'm late on this, but I just saw the E3 Nintendo Conference delayed. I was not expecting this. At all. Earlier today, Nintendo revealed at the end of their news conference a trailer for a brand new Metroid game: Metroid: Other M. Below you will find the trailer. I promise to bring you all everything there is on this game as it comes out. So far the forum and an incomplete game page is up for it right now. So if you missed it, enjoy:
