Well folks, the day is finally upon us. Metroid: Other M is in stores now! And we at MHQ have a little gift for you all as you begin playing. Thanks to a special arrangement between us and Prima Games, we have available for you to view and download the Prima Games Metroid: Other M Walkthrough for the entire first mission. You can download it on our Metroid: Other M page, or you can view it in our brand new Features Section! There you can view the walkthrough, download the PDF, and even order the whole walkthrough from Prima if you like it. I would personally like to thank the folks at Prima for making this possible. Hello and welcome to another Metroid Headquarters Update, this time brought to you by the recently resurrected Dragon!

Other M Updates and Contests

Hey look, updates! And from me of all things.

Yeah yeah, it's been forever since I personally made an update, but with everything that's been going on regarding Other M, I figured this would help MetroidMaster a bit. And speaking of Other M.... its launch is less than a week away. Woo!

I actually have something a little different for this update, though. The Returners (over at http://returnersgaming.blogspot.com/ ) are going to be hosting a 72 hour marathon for charity beginning on August 27th where they, get this, play through as many of the Metroid games as they can in 72 hours. And the gameplay will all be streamed for your enjoyment. Of course, there will be commentary and a live chatroom for discussion; certainly, getting through all the games in 72 hours will be quite a challenge. Now, since this is for a charity, they are accepting any and all donations they get. Their marathon begins in two days, so make sure to check them out on the 27th!

The second news update I have involves a contest over at AtomicGamer.com: The "Video Game Paparazzi: Samus” contest, to be specific.

Now that you're asking what that is... the contest is to photoshop beloved Samus Aran into the cover of a tabloid or gossip magazine (you know, those almost-trashy ones you see in grocery stores) and do it realistically. But that's not all!

The winner will receive a free copy of Metroid: Other M shipped right to their house on the same day it hits the store shelves! The contest link is here, and will end some time before Other M is released. If you've got photoshop skills, I'd definitely go check out the contest.

And in news of Other M, we have quite a few interesting topics going on in the Other M subforum, so make sure to visit it if you haven't already, and maybe throw a comment or two.

Well folks, it's that time of year again. MHQ is now six years old, and boy do we have lots to show for it. Metroid Headquarters is now one of the top Metroid sites on the Internet, and it's always getting better. We have thousands of visitors every month, and that number is only going to increase as time goes on (especially in light of the upcoming Metroid: Other M), and with 692 members registered on our forums, I couldn't be happier about MHQ's growth. We have just over 1 day until MHQ's 6th Anniversary, and the final preparations are well underway. We'll have plenty of things to announce and show off, so be sure to be here for it all. Affiliation News

As we near our 6th Anniversary, we have some news to report on the affiliation side of MHQ. First off, we have a brand new affiliate, LegendofZelda.com. They're one of the oldest and most comprehensive Zelda sites on the web. It's a real privilege to be affiliated with them, so if you are at all a Zelda fan (which I'm sure you are), be sure to check them out!

On a related note, I'd like to remind all Metroid-knowledgable folks that are reading this that our affiliate, Metroid Wiki is still growing, and they would welcome all of us to help contribute to their article base. They even have a page about us, so now we HAVE to help!

Alternate Other M Preorder Offer!

Okay, okay. I think I heard all none of you who commented on my last post LOUD AND CLEAR. "Gendy, I have no soul and hate art! Why would I want to preorder Other M to get an ArtFolio?" "Gendy, I don't want to not send my postcards! You suck like a deep-space vacuum for insinuating I might preorder something to do that!" and "Gendy, my socks aren't matching! How will an ArtFolio help solve this! You're no friend of mine!"

Okay, so you've got some points there. Contrary to popular belief, an ArtFolio will not help you find that missing purple sock with the bunny rabbits on it, so I thought I might make another offer. If you're willing to forgo your local Gamestop (which I'm still reading Games Top, if you were wondering) and instead turn to the wonderful world of e-commerce via Amazon.com, you can get a cool $20 off of your next video game purchase when you preorder Metroid: Other M. Do you know what this means? This means that when you get that other game you were planning on buying that comes out sometime after Other M does (you know the one), you'll be able to get it for $20 cheaper, and instead use that $20 to hire a Private Investigator to hunt down your precious purple bunny sock.

But you'll only need the PI if you ignore me when I tell you to check under the middle cushion of your couch. See! I just saved you another $20! You should mail it to me as thanks!

New Video and LOL

Hard work is going into the Anniversary preparations, but in the mean time we've uploaded this old Super Metroid Commercial, just because I recently rediscovered it and realized that (to the extent of my knowledge) the actress who plays Samus in the is commercial is the only one to legitimately play her other than voice acting...and we have no idea who she is. =\

I also quite recently came across a quite fake and hilarious rumor pertaining to the probably-will-never-happen Metroid Movie. According to the rumor, Jessica Simpson was attached to play Samus Aran in a movie directed by Uwe Boll. The rumor goes (quoting word for word):

Actress Jessica Simpson is rumored to have secured the role of Space Bounty Hunter Samus Aran in a Hollywood version of a Nintendo game. In the game, Metroid, the hero controls Samus on her goal to rid the world of energy sucking beasts called Metroids. Think of it as a cross between Aliens and Dracula.

Simpson is excited to restart her movie career and is reportedly taking part in the selection of Samus' love interest. Simpson's publicists has also confirmed that she will be contributing to the plot. "Ms Simpson feels the plot is too complex and would like to move the plot closer to it's core story of love and adventure.

The movie, rumored to be directed by famed director Uwe Boll will feature a wise cracking ethnic Metroid played by the fat kid from good burger.

A LOT of Updates

Boy do I have a lot of stuff to announce/talk about today, so let's not waste time.

First off, the new fan game pages are finally done and live! aside from being the last part of the site to be upgraded to use our new backend system, they have a TON of new features. You can easily see the featured download for the fan game, view previous versions and old demos/engines, view extras, and see the current progress of the game. We are also introducing ratings, where you can rate a fan game on a simple 5-Metroid system, as well as extending our comments system to allow you to comment on fan games as well. Also, fan game creators can display custom coded sections on their page (leading to a separate page for it if they want). An example of this can be seen with Tetroid's High Score Table. Soon, we will start accepting new fan games to feature on the site (we really do need some <_<;), where, once approved, you can manage the page with an easy to use system yourself. More on that to come soon, but for now enjoy the new features on the current games.

Moving on...I have slightly tweaked the way that wallpapers and screenshots are viewed for games (and fan games or screenshots). Wallpapers now show a preview of two to begin with, and screenshots now show up in a site matching auto-sized popup. Also, the way video are displayed has been radically altered. As opposed to being shown as regular downloads, we now give you the option to download the video in the highest resolution we have, and all lower standard resolutions. All downloadable video sare in MP4 format, which is playable on just about every OS and media player. We also give the option, should you click on the thumbnail, to stream the video right here on MHQ, via our new YouTube channel.

...And last but not least, you have no doubt noticed by now the looming countdown atop MHQ, slowly but surely counting down to our 6th Anniversary. We have several things in store, some of which will be announced shortly.

E3 2010 News

So Nintendo held it's Media Conference this morning, and it was chock full of surprises. In addition to revealing several new games (Zelda, Kirby, Goldeneye, KidIcarus), and spilling details on the Nintendo 3DS, it also provided some new detail on Other M, such as the official Box Art and ESRB rating (all of which have been added to the game page). A new trailer was also unveiled, which can be viewed below.

Also, it was announced that Retro Studios (who brought you the Prime games) is now working on the a new Donkey Kong Country game, expected to be released later this year...so yeah...there's that...

Other M Japan Release Date

Nintendo of Japan announced today, amongst other things, that Metroid: Other M would be released in Japan on September 2nd, 2010. We have amended our game page to reflect the announcement and will continue to bring you all the Other M info as it is unveiled.

Gamestop Announces Other M Preorder Bonus!

So here I am, just minding my business when somebody goes and dumps a steaming pile of COOL right onto my lap. Or into my eyes. I get the two confused.

Either way though, Gamestop (which for some reason I cannot stop reading as Games Top now...) has just announced that preordered copies of Metroid: Other M will be bundled with a special Art Folio, which contains "16 individual high-quality cards" for your viewing pleasure. A sample picture can be found on Gamestop.com's Metroid: Other M page, but with no size reference, it's impossible to tell how big these "cards" will be. Personally, I would expect them to be postcard size, since for some reason not sending those oh-so-sendable little cards is just all the rage in Japan right now.

So then, you guys all ready with cash in hand?

More New Other M Footage

Recently a new video from Other M has surfaced and, while it does show the oh-so-publicized 3D Mother Brain Battle scene, it show some new thing as well, such as a cut back and forth between the 3D cutscene and the SM one, brand new footage of the the inside of Samus's ship, and new music. The way that the clip is composed makes me think that it may be the opening sequence before the main menu. You can see the clip below:

Note: The clip is in japanese and in bad quality. If a better quality version arises or one that's in English, we will replace the clip.

Other M Delayed

Well this is an unfortunate turn of events, but I've just gotten confirmation from Nintendo's press site that Metroid: Other M's release has been delayed until August 31st, 2010. While this is obviously disappointing for many, one can only hope that it's for the betterment of the game. We'll bring you more Other M updates as they are made available, so be sure to keep checking MHQ for more.

A New Affiliate

We've added a new affiliate to MHQ, Metroid Wiki. They're an independent Wiki that focuses solely on the Metroid franchise (as the name implies). They got their start at the beginning of 2010, and in 3 1/2 months have a fair amount of articles written up there for that amount of time. That said, they could always use the expertise of us Metroid fans to help them out a little, so be sure to head on over there and share anything Metroid that you can think of! In MHQ news, the Fan Game index has been converted to the new layout system, which only leaves the fan game pages themselves and all attached pages...that should be fun...

Slowness (I have an excuse. (Not really.))

First off, let me apologize for the lack of activity regarding the new layout system. The comic viewer was broken for some time while I was stumped on how to go about displaying it the way we needed to. A small epiphany on Thursday however remedied that problem, and now pretty much al of the Fan Art section is now renovated. That leaves one section left.....Fan Games (what will by far be the biggest improvement). I've also been working on making MHQ more search engine and network friendly. The good news on that front, we are (in some form) on the front page of every major search engine's results for "Metroid". Very exciting. On the Metroid news front it's been a bit slow, but with E3 looming ahead we can only expect great things to be known soon, so be sure and stick to MHQ for it all!

Other M Cancelled, Turned into Movie Instead

In a surprise move, Project M announced today that Metroid: Other M had been cancelled...as a game. Apparently the team have been in talks for some time now with both John Woo and Michael Bay (confirming both of those old rumors) to co-produce an animated movie based on the Other M storyline. Like Other M, the movie is to take place after the events of Super Metroid and delve deep into Samus's past. A spokesperson for Project M said in an online statement earlier today: "The more we saw how beautiful the cinematics were from the game, we realized more and more that to add gameplay to such a fleshed out storyline would be pointless. Therefore, we have decided to use the cinematics we have, with the addition of a few more to fill in the few gameplay segments we had, to release a Metroid Movie this summer, which we have tentatively titled 'Metroid: Other M(ovie)'." Everyone here at the Houston MHQ offices are working round the clock to bring you everything we can on this sudden change. We'll bring you more on this in the coming weeks.

New Gameplay Video

Earlier today Metroid.com put up a new video of what you should expect the gameplay to look like.

We've known that it would be 3rd person, holding the Wiimote sideways, then go into first person to point and shoot by pointing the Wiimote at the TV, but we didn't know much about the 3rd person yet, well, I think this does a pretty good job showing it off along with the transition to first person mode.

Just make sure to click on the 3/30/2010 update area at the bottom right after the trailer is over (or skipped).

From the looks of it, the third person will work between areas of side-scroller running and jumping around like earlier classic 2D games, but also having areas to run around forward, backward, left, and right with no constraints except the ceiling and floor like in the Prime games.
